We’re officially in that funny part of September where it still feels like summer during the day, but fall is clearly starting to sneak in.

And Ocean County seems to be leaning into both.

This weekend has a little bit of everything: waterfront fun, food festivals, live music, Oktoberfest vibes, fall markets, family events, and even a Renaissance Faire if you’re feeling adventurous.

So whether you’re hanging onto summer for dear life or already mentally decorating for fall, there’s plenty happening around the county this weekend.

This week, the spotlight is on SWEAT440 Toms River, a local fitness studio built for anyone who wants a great workout without having to rearrange their entire day around it.

Located on Hooper Avenue, SWEAT440 offers coach-led, 40-minute workouts with classes starting every 10 minutes. That means if you miss the 5:00 class, no problem. Another one is right behind it.

Each workout moves through four 10-minute stations and blends strength, cardio, and functional movement. The format is designed to work for everyone from complete beginners to experienced gym-goers.

Long before the boardwalk, rides, and summer crowds, the area around present-day Seaside Heights had a much different reputation.

In the 1700s, Cranberry Inlet cut through the barrier island near what is now Seaside Heights. During the Revolutionary War era, New Jersey privateers used the inlet and nearby shoreline while raiding British ships moving along the coast.

Yes, pirates. In Ocean County.

The inlet was an important route between the Atlantic and Barnegat Bay for decades, but storms gradually reshaped the shoreline, and Cranberry Inlet eventually closed in the early 1800s.

So the next time you’re walking the Seaside boardwalk, just remember: a couple hundred years before the arcades and Kohr’s, ships were navigating an inlet nearby while privateers were hunting British vessels offshore.

The Shore is giving us another little taste of both seasons this weekend.

Friday looks warm and pretty nice, with a mix of sun and clouds and a high around 83. Saturday cools down quite a bit, with highs closer to the low 70s and a mix of sun and clouds.

Sunday stays mild, but that’s the day to keep an eye on, with more clouds and a chance of showers or an afternoon thunderstorm.

So…Friday and Saturday look like your best bets for outdoor plans. Sunday may be more of a “have a backup plan” kind of day.
