Hey neighbors…

Welcome back (and for many of you, for the first time) to The Shore Things!

As many of you know, the goal for me and the team is to give you a clean, curated list of events going on in Ocean County this weekend. Some of these are one-time opportunities. Others are weekly or monthly staples that everyone should try out at some point.

We also want to give you plenty of fun, relaxed, and encouraging reading to keep you smiling as you plan out your weekend.

Let’s dive in!

Table of Contents

Did you know…

I was doing some research for the newsletter, and I stumbled on a piece for the Barnegat Lighthouse. I had forgotten a lot of the history of “Old Barney.”

Did you know the lighthouse was first lit on January 1, 1859? (Fun fact: It was started two years earlier based on the design of one George Meade, the future Civil War general and the Union hero at the Battle of Gettysburg — sorry, I’m a history nut!)

The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1927. After decades of neglect, restoration started in the 1980s, but it was a slow process. It wasn’t until 2009 that the light was once again relit (this time via a new LED beacon).

The importance of that date? It happened on January 1st of that year, which was the 150th anniversary to the day of the original lighting. (Are you getting goosebumps too?)

In many ways, I feel like picking up this newsletter again with so many new subscribers is my own small version of a relighting. I’m glad you’ve chosen to come along for the ride.

If you’ve never done the climb at Old Barney, you can see what it looks like here…

You can read more about the lighthouse and its museum here…

Headed to the movies this weekend?

If you’re looking for a good movie this weekend, there are a few good options to choose from…

If you’ve got kids, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie has finally hit theaters this week. While we haven’t seen it yet, there is a lot of buzz around this one featuring Chase, Marshall, and the rest of the crew on a mysterious island populated by dinosaurs!

If you’re feeling the need for a good drama, The Odyssey continues its strong theatrical run. We saw Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece on opening weekend, and it’s been sparking conversations ever since. If you like epic storytelling, this one’s worth watching…in IMAX, if you can swing it!

If you want something the whole family can enjoy, swing in to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This movie has completely blown up the box office (it’s made over $1.5 billion in less than two weeks!) and is a great chance to catch up with the Marvel saga before Avengers: Doomsday arrives in a few months.

What’s in store for that unpredictable Ocean County weather…

Expect beautiful weather this weekend! The extended forecast looks warm and sunny for the most part, but bring an umbrella just in case…

That’s it for this week.

Phew, it’s great to be at this again. Thank you again for so much support as we get things moving once more.

If you think of it, send me some photos and a review of any of the events that you end up attending. You can reach me at [email protected]. I’ll try to include them in next week’s newsletter!

P.S.

Our team had such a great response to the relaunch announcement last week. I just want to let you know that we are actively going through your feedback. (Thank you to everyone who filled out the survey!)

If you missed it, you can still fill out the survey here:

More to come!
